The fantastic sportsman Egan Bernal is a professional cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam Ineos Grenadiers. In 2019 he became the first Latin American to win the Tour de France, and was also the youngest winner since 1909. In 2021 he won the Giro d’Italia.
Born and raised in Columbia, Bernal started riding at a young age, and by the time he was nine he was taking part in local races. He won a training scholarship and went to study at the Universidad de la Sabana. As an Amateur he took part in mainly mountain bike events, winning races in Brazil, Costa Rica, and the United States, as well as picking up a Silver at the 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships and a Bronze at the same event in 2015.
Bernal had also begun to see success in junior road racing, winning a few events in 2015, and the following year he turned professional when he signed a contract with Team Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec. He continued to impress on the circuit and in 2018 he made his debut for Team Sky (which rebranded later as Ineos Grenadiers). He won the National Time Trial Championships in 2018, as well as the Tour of California, and 2019 saw him victorious in the Tour de France in both the General classification and the Young rider classification. That year he also won the Gran Piemonte. After the Covid-19 pandemic, he returned to the slopes and was victorious in the Giro d’Italia in both General and Young rider classifications.
