Elton Brand was born on March 11, 1979, in Cortlandt Manor, New York. His basketball career began at Peekskill High School, where he quickly became a dominant force on the varsity team, averaging 40 points and 20 rebounds per game. He played AAU basketball alongside future NBA players Lamar Odom and Ron Artest. By his senior year, Brand was recognized as one of the top high school players nationally and received the New York State Mr. Basketball award. He led his team to two state championships before committing to Duke University, joining other highly recruited players such as Shane Battier.
At Duke, Brand continued to excel, particularly during his sophomore year (1998–99), where he was the team’s primary inside presence. He guided the Blue Devils to the NCAA Final Four championship game, earning consensus National Player of the Year honors. Following this successful collegiate career, Brand declared for the NBA Draft after his sophomore season, becoming one of the first players under Coach Mike Krzyzewski to leave Duke early for the draft. His professional journey began when he was selected as the first overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, marking the start of an 18-year playing career. He played for the Chicago Bulls (1999–2001), Los Angeles Clippers (2001–2008), Philadelphia 76ers (2008–2012, 2016), Dallas Mavericks (2012–2013), and Atlanta Hawks (2013–2015).
Throughout his NBA playing career, Brand was a two-time NBA All-Star (2002, 2006) and was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 2006. He earned co-Rookie of the Year honors in 2000. Beyond the court, Brand established the Elton Brand Foundation in 2000, supporting various causes in Chicago, Peekskill, and Durham. He also developed business ventures, including Gibraltar Films, a company involved in film production and distribution, which produced the film “Rescue Dawn.” After retiring from playing, Brand returned to the Philadelphia 76ers organization, initially as a player development consultant in 2016, and then as the general manager of the Delaware 87ers (now Blue Coats) in 2017. In 2018, he was promoted to general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers, making significant roster decisions for the team.
