Emily Kuroda

Emily Keiko Kuroda, born on October 30, 1952, in Fresno, California, embarked on her acting journey with a focus on dramatic arts, majoring in drama at California State University, Fresno. Her early career saw her establish herself within the theater community, particularly as a veteran of East West Players, Los Angeles’ premier Asian American theater group. She has performed in numerous plays, including Luis Alfaro’s “Straight as a Line” at Playwrights’ Arena, directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera, and Chay Yew’s “Red” at East West Players. Her stage work also extends to “Winter People” at the Boston Court and Ken Narasaki’s “Innocent When You Dream” at the Electric Lodge, which was directed by her husband, Alberto Isaac. These theatrical engagements provided a foundation for her diverse roles across various mediums.

Kuroda’s career progressed into significant television and film roles. She is widely recognized for her portrayal of Mrs. Kim in the Warner Brothers’ series “Gilmore Girls,” a role she held for seven years and reprised for the Netflix revisit in 2016. Her television credits include recurring roles and guest appearances in productions such as “Drop Dead Diva” (as Margaret Cho’s mother), “Medium,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “In Case of Emergency,” “Six Feet Under,” “The King of Queens,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Practice.” In film, she has appeared in notable releases like “RED,” “PEEP WORLD,” “Minority Report,” and the animated Disney film “Strange World” (2022) where she voiced the character Ro. She has also contributed to independent Asian American films, including “The Sensei,” “Yellow,” and “Stand Up for Justice.”

Throughout her career, Kuroda has received several accolades recognizing her talent and contributions to the performing arts. She is the recipient of five Dramalogue Awards for performances in plays such as “Ikebana,” “The Maids,” “Minimata,” “The Golden Gate,” and “Visitors from Nagasaki.” She also earned a Garland Award for outstanding performance in “Straight As a Line” and an Entertainment Today Award for “Winter People.” In 2000, she received an L.A. Ovation Award nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Play for “Straight As a Line.” Her commitment to theater was further acknowledged with the Playwrights’ Arena Outstanding Contribution to Los Angeles Theatre award and the East West Players’ Rae Creevey Award in 2006. She maintains active memberships in professional organizations including the Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the Actors’ Equity Association, reflecting her ongoing engagement in the industry.
