Eoin Christopher Macken was born on February 21, 1983, in Dublin, Ireland. He began his career in the early 2000s while studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology at University College Dublin. During this time, he participated in a university fashion show, which led to him joining Morgan the Agency and subsequently becoming the face of Abercrombie and Fitch’s 2003 campaign. He also modeled for Ralph Lauren and GQ. His acting debut came in the 2005 film ‘Studs’, followed by a role as Gavin Cluxton in RTÉ’s ‘Fair City’ in 2008.
Macken has consistently expanded his presence in both film and television. His early television work included roles in BBC’s ‘Small Island’ and Neil Marshall’s film ‘Centurion’. A significant turning point in his acting career was his recurring role as Sir Gwaine in the BBC series ‘Merlin’ from 2010 to 2012, appearing in four episodes of the third series and all episodes of the fourth and fifth. He later garnered international recognition for his role as Dr. TC Callahan in NBC’s ‘The Night Shift’, which ran from 2014 to 2017. Other notable television appearances include ‘Nightflyers’ (2018), ‘Stumptown’ (2020), and a main role as Gavin Harris in NBC’s ‘La Brea’ (2021-2024). Macken is currently slated to star as Davis Collins in the Netflix series ‘Ransom Canyon’ in 2025.
Beyond acting, Macken is an accomplished filmmaker and author. He wrote and directed his debut feature film ‘Christian Blake’ in 2008, which premiered at the Mid Ulster Film Festival. He continued to write and direct films such as ‘Dreaming for You’ (2008), ‘Leopard’ (originally titled ‘Cold’) in 2013, and ‘Here Are the Young Men’ in 2020, an adaptation of Rob Doyle’s novel. His directorial work also includes the satirical comedy ‘Grey Elephant’ and the independent films ‘Stalker’ and ‘Charlie Casanova’, where he also contributed as cinematographer. As an author, he published ‘Kingdom of Scars’ (2014), which was shortlisted for the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards, and ‘Hunter and the Grape’. He is currently working on his third novel, ‘Circus’.
