Eric Peters

Eric Peters was born on January 28, 1969, in Glasgow, Scotland. He attended Brentwood School, Essex, and later the University of Cambridge, where he captained the university’s rugby team. Peters played rugby for England at both Under 21 and Student levels before electing to represent Scotland at the senior international level. His initial engagement with rugby was during the amateur era, which allowed him to pursue a parallel education, qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor and gaining experience with a property consultant firm.

Peters joined Bath Rugby Club in September 1993. During his time with Bath, he was part of the team that won the 1998 Heineken Cup, serving as a replacement in the final against Brive. He made his debut for Scotland in January 1995 against Canada. The sport transitioned to professionalism in 1996, at which point Peters became a professional player. A notable career moment was scoring a try against Wales in 1995, which was described by Bill McLaren as “one of the great tries.” In 1999, he was slated to captain Scotland for a match against Italy, but a shattered kneecap in April 1999 sidelined him for over a year. During his recovery in March 2000, Peters was diagnosed with testicular cancer, which he successfully overcame after chemotherapy.

Following his departure from Bath while still recovering, Peters joined Harlequins in December 2000. Subsequent brief spells followed with Fylde and Rotherham before he joined Connacht in 2002. He also made a brief return to the Scotland national team in 2002. Peters retired from professional rugby in 2003, concluding his playing career having primarily played as a Number 8. He then fully focused on his career as a Chartered Surveyor. He served as a Senior Associate at property consultants King Sturge and continues to be involved in property consulting. Peters also provides commentary on rugby for BBC Radio 5 Live and supports the Orchid cancer charity.
