Professional rugby union player Warrick Gelant hails from South Africa and competes for Racing 92 in the Top 14 as well as the South African national side. He played fullback, which is his primary position, for the winning Springboks in the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.
As part of their preparation for the 2015 World Rugby Under 20 Championship, South Africa increased their Under-20 training group in March 2015, and Gelant was named in it. In April 2015, he participated for them in a friendly game against a Varsity Cup Dream Team. Additionally, he was a member of the South Africa Under-20 team that visited Argentina in May 2015, coming on as a substitute in the opening game.
Gelant was selected for the final World Rugby Under-20 Championship squad. He started all three of South Africa’s matches in Pool B of the championship, victories over Australia (46-13), Samoa (40-8), and hosts Italy (33-5) to enable South Africa finish first in Pool B and advance to the semifinals with the greatest pool stage record of any team in the competition. The semi-final match against England was started by Gelant, who was unable to stop South Africa from losing 20-28 and being eliminated from the competition by England for the second year in a row. The third-place play-off match against France was also started by Gelant, who assisted South Africa in winning 31-18 and securing third place in the tournament. In the South African team for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Gelant was selected. After defeating England in the championship match, South Africa won the event.
