About

Evgeniy Borisovich Mirman, known professionally as Eugene Mirman, was born on July 24, 1974, in Moscow, Russia (then the RSFSR, USSR). His family, consisting of his Latvian Jewish father, Boris, a civil engineer, and his Russian Jewish mother, Marina, immigrated to the United States when he was four years old. They settled in Lexington, Massachusetts, where Mirman attended William Diamond Middle School and Lexington High School. Following his high school education, Mirman enrolled at Hampshire College in Western Massachusetts, where he pursued a unique Bachelor of Arts degree in comedy. His thesis for this program was a one-hour stand-up routine, showcasing his early dedication to the craft. Mirman later delivered the commencement address at his high school in 2009 and at Hampshire College in 2012, reflecting his continued ties to his educational roots.

Mirman’s career began to gain significant traction with the release of his first album, “The Absurd Nightclub Comedy of Eugene Mirman,” in 2004. This album was recognized as one of the best of the year by The A.V. Club and Time Out New York. He followed this success with “En Garde, Society” released by Sub Pop in 2006, and “God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger’s” in 2009. His stand-up performances extended beyond traditional comedy clubs, with Mirman frequently appearing in rock venues and theaters. He demonstrated a versatile touring presence, opening for notable bands like The Shins, Robyn Hitchcock, Modest Mouse, and Yo La Tengo. Mirman also toured alongside prominent comedians such as Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn as part of the Comedians of Comedy tour, and later with Flight of the Conchords, appearing in their HBO series from 2007 to 2009. These diverse engagements established his reputation as a respected and widely recognized figure in the comedy scene.

In television, Mirman has held numerous roles, with his most prominent being the voice of Gene Belcher in the Fox animated series “Bob’s Burgers,” a role he has played since 2011 and reprised in “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” (2022). His acting credits also include Yvgeny Mirminsky in “Delocated” (2009–2012), Eugene in HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords” (2007–2009), and guest appearances on shows such as “Third Watch,” “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” “The Colbert Report,” “Archer,” “The Simpsons” (as Gene Belcher), and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” Mirman’s career also includes writing, with credits on his comedy specials and TV series like “Comedy Central Presents.” He has also taken on executive producer roles for projects such as “Eugene!” (2012) and “Zach Zimmerman: Surprise Me” (2025). From 2008 to 2017, Mirman ran the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, a significant annual event in the comedy circuit. His stand-up special “Eugene Mirman: Vegan on His Way to the Complain Store” was released on Netflix in 2015, directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, further solidifying his presence in various media.
