Ezra Matthew Miller was born on September 30, 1992, in Wyckoff, New Jersey. The child of Marta Koch, a modern dancer, and Robert S. Miller, a former senior VP for Hyperion Books and later a publisher at Workman Publishing, Miller has two older sisters. From a young age, Miller trained as an opera singer, a pursuit encouraged by their kindergarten teacher to help overcome a debilitating stutter. This vocal training, focused on breath control, successfully remediated their speech impediment. Miller sang with the Metropolitan Opera and attended Rockland Country Day School and The Hudson School before leaving at age 16 upon the release of their first feature film.
Miller’s acting career began in 2008 with the independent film “Afterschool.” This was followed by appearances in television series such as “Californication,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and “Royal Pains,” and roles in films like “City Island” (2009), “Every Day” (2010), “Beware the Gonzo” (2010), and “Another Happy Day” (2011). Miller gained significant critical acclaim for portraying Kevin Khatchadourian in the 2011 psychological thriller “We Need to Talk About Kevin.” They further solidified their reputation with their role as Patrick in the 2012 teen drama “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” appearing alongside Logan Lerman and Emma Watson.
Their career expanded into major franchises, with Miller cast as Credence Barebone in the “Fantastic Beasts” film series, appearing in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (2016), “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” (2018), and “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” (2022). Miller also took on the iconic superhero role of The Flash (Barry Allen) in the DC Extended Universe, featuring in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) and “Justice League” (2017), before leading their standalone film, “The Flash” (2023). Other notable projects include a role in Judd Apatow’s “Trainwreck” (2015), the psychological thriller “The Stanford Prison Experiment” (2015), and the TV miniseries “The Stand” (2021).
