Fernando Torres made his debut for Atlético Madrid’s first team in 2001, playing a significant role in securing the club’s promotion to La Liga in the 200102 season. Having joined the Atlético Madrid youth system in 1995, Torres quickly rose through the ranks, winning the Nike Cup with the youth team in 1998 and signing his first professional contract in 1999. Internationally, he showcased his potential early, winning the UEFA European Under-16 Championship with Spain in 2001 and the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in 2002. By age 19, he was named captain of Atlético Madrid, establishing himself as a formidable forward with 75 goals in 174 La Liga appearances before his departure in 2007.
Throughout his international career, Torres earned 110 caps and scored 38 goals, making him Spain’s third-highest top goalscorer. Following short stints on loan at AC Milan in 2014, Torres returned to Atlético Madrid on loan later that year, signing permanently in 2016. He added another major European title to his resume, winning the UEFA Europa League with Atlético Madrid in the 201718 season, before concluding his illustrious playing career with Japanese club Sagan Tosu in 2019. Transitioning his deep expertise to management, Torres was appointed head coach of Atlético Madrid’s Juvenil A (U19) team in 2021.
As of June 2024, he now serves as the head coach for Atlético Madrid B, continuing his impact on the sport at a professional level.
