Filippo Ganna, born on July 25, 1996, in Verbania, Italy, is a prominent figure in professional cycling, excelling in both track and road disciplines. The son of former Italian Olympic sprint canoer Marco Ganna, he first emerged on the cycling scene at the 2016 World Indoor Championships, showcasing a distinctive individual pursuit style characterized by negative splits where he starts slowly and progressively increases speed to win. He began his amateur career with Pedale Ossolano in 2012, moving to Aspiratori Otelli Castanese Verbania in 2014 and Viris Maserati–Sisal Matchpoint in 2015 before joining Team Colpack in 2016.
Ganna turned professional with UAE Abu Dhabi in 2017. After two seasons, he transitioned to Team Sky, which later became INEOS Grenadiers, in 2019. His career highlights include being a six-time world champion in the individual pursuit, winning a total of nine medals at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships. He secured an Olympic gold medal in the team pursuit at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where the Italian team set new world records twice. On the road, Ganna has won the men’s individual time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in 2020 and 2021. He has also secured seven individual stages in the Giro d’Italia across 2020, 2021, and 2024, and two stages in the Vuelta a España in 2023 and 2025. In October 2022, Ganna set a new UCI Hour Record, covering 56.792 kilometers at the Tissot Velodrome. His consistent performance and ability to excel in various time trial and pursuit formats have established him as a leading cyclist.
