Born on September 23, 1992, in Bridge of Allan, Scotland, Finn Russell began his rugby journey at Wallace High School in Stirling. Before his professional rugby career, Russell pursued an apprenticeship as a stonemason for three years, a formative experience that shaped his work ethic. In 2013, he received the John Macphail Scholarship, which provided him with 15 weeks in New Zealand’s South Island, playing for local clubs in the Christchurch area and benefiting from specialized coaching at the Canterbury Rugby Football Union International High Performance Unit. This early period of development laid the groundwork for his future success in professional rugby.
Russell’s professional club career began with Glasgow Warriors. He made his debut on February 10, 2013, against Zebre in the Pro12. His performance led to a full-time contract for the 2014–15 season, where he played a key role in Glasgow’s Pro12 title triumph, scoring 22 points in a crucial match against Ulster and contributing to the final victory over Munster. In November 2017, Russell departed Glasgow to join French club Racing 92, where he continued to showcase his playmaking abilities. In December 2022, he announced his move to Bath Rugby after the 2023 Rugby World Cup, marking a new chapter in his club career where he has continued to be a pivotal player, including winning the Best Back of the Season award at Bath Rugby’s Annual Awards in 2024 and securing the 2024–25 European Challenge Cup and the 2024–25 Premiership Rugby title with Bath.
Internationally, Russell made his debut for Scotland in 2014 during the summer tour of North America. He was part of Scotland’s squad for the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. His talent also led to selections for the British & Irish Lions tours in 2017, 2021, and 2025. In the 2021 tour to South Africa, he played a crucial role in the decisive third Test, kicking 11 points and receiving widespread praise for his performance. In May 2025, he was awarded Howden’s Player of the Series during the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia, further cementing his status as one of the world’s leading rugby players. In 2024, Russell was named co-captain for the Six Nations Championship, highlighting his leadership qualities.
