Francesco Molinari was born on November 8, 1982, in Turin, Italy. He graduated from the University of Turin with a degree in economics. His amateur career included winning the Italian Amateur Stroke Play Championship twice and the Italian Match Play Championship in 2004. He turned professional in 2004, beginning his journey in professional golf.
Molinari earned his European Tour card in 2005. His first European Tour victory came in May 2006 at the Telecom Italia Open, making him the first Italian to win the event since 1980. Over the next few years, he consistently performed, recording twenty top-10 finishes and reaching the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking in October 2009. In 2009, he teamed up with his brother Edoardo Molinari to win Italy’s first World Cup. He secured significant international victories, including the 2010 WGC-HSBC Champions and the 2012 Reale Seguros Open de España. He represented Europe in three winning Ryder Cup teams (2010, 2012, 2018), notably achieving a 5–0–0 record in the 2018 Ryder Cup.
The 2018 season marked a significant turning point in Molinari’s career. He won the BMW PGA Championship, his fifth European Tour win. This was followed by his first PGA Tour victory at the Quicken Loans National, where he shot a final-round 62 to win by eight strokes. In July 2018, Molinari achieved his first major victory at The Open Championship, becoming the first Italian professional golfer to win a major. This win moved him to sixth place in the Official World Golf Ranking. In 2019, he secured his third PGA Tour victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Molinari continuously maintained a top 100 Official World Golf Ranking from November 2008 to November 2020. He is also an ambassador for Borne, a medical research charity.
