Danish ice hockey goaltender Frederik “Freddie” Andersen enjoyed one of the best seasons of his nine-year NHL career for the Carolina Hurricanes in 2021-22. The Danish ace finished three wins short of his career high total of 38, and was only slowed down when an injury ended his season early. Many believe he has the potential to be even better in goal for the Hurricanes in future seasons and that he will be a contender for the prestigious Vezina Trophy. At international level Anderson was a member of Denmark’s national team that played at the 2010 IIHF World Championships. He has also played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Anaheim Ducks.
Born in Herning, Denmark, Anderson began his playing career in Europe playing in the Danish Superisligaen for Frederikshavn White Hawks. He then joined Frölunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, Elitserien, where he received a nomination for the Elitserien Rookie of the Year. Drafted by the Hurricanes in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Anderson felt the time wasn’t yet right for his NHL career and later re-entered the draft in 2012. The star goalie was picked 87th overall by the Ducks and spent the first few years of his NHL career with the club.
A five year stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs followed for Anderson, and the Dane helped the Leafs qualify for the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs. In 2021 he signed a $9 million contract with the Hurricanes, and in 2022 he was named to play in the 2022 NHL All-Star Game.
