Frederik Willem de Klerk fundamentally transformed the political landscape of South Africa during the twilight years of the twentieth century. Operating politically as a social conservative combined with an economic liberal, he successfully steered the ruling National Party through an unprecedented period of national reckoning and institutional change.
Assuming the office of state president in 1989, he led the administration that dismantled the deeply entrenched system of racial segregation known as apartheid. Under his leadership, the government legalized previously banned anti-apartheid organizations, released political prisoners including Nelson Mandela, and initiated negotiations that ultimately led to the establishment of universal suffrage and democratic elections in 1994.
Following the historic transfer of power, he served as deputy president in the government of national unity from 1994 until 1997. He continued guiding the National Party until his retirement from active politics, concluding a remarkably consequential career that brought a peaceful end to decades of white-minority rule.
