About

Gerald Garrison Hearst was born on January 4, 1971, in Lincolnton, Georgia. He achieved prominence as a running back for the University of Georgia Bulldogs from 1990 to 1992. During his junior year in 1992, Hearst led the nation in touchdowns with 21 and scoring with 11.5 points per game, setting new school and Southeastern Conference (SEC) records for points scored (126), total touchdowns (21), rushing touchdowns (19), and average yards per carry (6.8). His collegiate accolades included being a unanimous All-American selection, the recipient of the Doak Walker Award, ESPN’s ESPY Winner for Outstanding Collegiate Athlete, and SEC Player of the Year in 1992. He finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting that year. Hearst concluded his college career second on Georgia’s all-time rushing list with 3,232 yards, trailing only Herschel Walker.

Hearst was a first-round pick, selected third overall, by the Phoenix Cardinals in the 1993 NFL Draft. After limited play in his initial two seasons due to knee injuries, he had a breakthrough year in 1995, rushing for 1,070 yards. He later played for the Cincinnati Bengals in 1996, gaining 847 yards. His most notable professional period was with the San Francisco 49ers, where in 1997, he rushed for 1,019 yards and four touchdowns. In 1998, Hearst delivered his best statistical season, rushing for 1,570 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 5.1 yards per carry, and earning a Pro Bowl selection. This season included a then-franchise record for rushing yards and a 96-yard game-winning touchdown run. However, his career faced a significant challenge in the 1998 Divisional Playoffs when he suffered a severe ankle injury, complicated by avascular necrosis, forcing him to miss two seasons.

Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Hearst made a comeback in 2001, becoming the first NFL player to return after suffering avascular necrosis. He again rushed for over 1,000 yards, accumulating 1,206 yards, and was recognized with the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award and a second Pro Bowl selection. He continued to play for the 49ers until 2003, with rushing totals of 972 yards in 2002 and 768 yards in 2003. He concluded his NFL career with the Denver Broncos in 2004, playing seven games before another injury led to his placement on injured reserve.
