Gary Lewis Weston Gulman was born on July 17, 1970, in Peabody, Massachusetts, the youngest of three brothers. Raised in a Jewish family, his parents divorced before he was two years old, leading to financial struggles during his childhood. As a sensitive child, Gary enjoyed drawing, painting, playing basketball, and making his friends laugh. He attended Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, where he played football after his junior year. He later earned a football scholarship to Boston College, playing as a tight end during his freshman year before leaving the team. He graduated in 1993 with a degree in accounting.
After college, Gary Gulman worked for two years as an accountant at Coopers & Lybrand, a Big Six accounting firm, while pursuing stand-up comedy at open mic nights. He then transitioned to working as a substitute teacher, often testing new material on high school students before performing it on stage. In 1999, Gary began to pursue stand-up full-time, moving to Los Angeles where he worked on various development deals, though none were picked up by television networks at the time. His professional career gained significant traction with appearances on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in 1999 and the “Late Show with David Letterman” the following year.
