About

Gary Hartpence, born on November 28, 1936, in Ottawa, Kansas, pursued legal studies after initially intending to enter the ministry. He earned a B.A. in philosophy from Southern Nazarene University in 1958, a B.D. from Yale Divinity School in 1961, and an LL.B. from Yale Law School in 1964. His career in public service began as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice from 1964 to 1965, followed by a role as special assistant to the solicitor of the U.S. Department of the Interior from 1965 to 1967. He then entered private law practice in Denver, Colorado. Hart gained national prominence as the campaign manager for George McGovern’s 1972 Democratic presidential nomination campaign. In 1974, he was elected to the United States Senate representing Colorado, serving two terms until 1987. During his time in the Senate, he was a member of the Church Committee and led the Senate investigation into the Three Mile Island accident.

Hart was a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984, challenging Walter Mondale. He was known for his ‘new ideas’ platform, though he ultimately lost the nomination to Mondale. In 1988, he again sought the Democratic presidential nomination and was initially viewed as the front-runner. However, his campaign was suspended amidst media reports of an extramarital affair. Despite withdrawing, he re-entered the race in December 1987 but withdrew again after poor primary results. After his political career, Hart continued to be involved in public policy, notably co-chairing the Hart-Rudman Task Force on Homeland Security, which foresaw the risk of significant terrorist attacks on the U.S. He earned a D.Phil. in politics from the University of Oxford in 2001. From 2014 to 2017, he served as the United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland, contributing to peace processes.

Throughout his post-Senate career, Hart has been a prolific writer, authoring numerous non-fiction books and articles on politics, national security, and American history. He is also known for writing several political thrillers under the pseudonym John Blackthorn. He has held distinguished academic positions, including an endowed professorship at the University of Colorado at Denver and visiting lecturer roles at Oxford University and Yale University. Hart remains an influential voice on foreign policy and national security, serving on various advisory councils and as Chair of the U.S. State Department’s International Security Advisory Council and the U.S. Defense Department’s Threat Advisory Council.
