About

George Osborne was born Gideon Oliver Osborne on May 23, 1971, in London, and was educated at Norland Place School, Colet Court, and St Paul’s School before studying modern history at Oxford University. He began his professional life with a brief stint as a freelance journalist for “The Daily Telegraph” before joining the Conservative Research Department in 1994, quickly rising to head its political section. His early political career included serving as a special adviser to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Douglas Hogg, and working for Prime Minister John Major at 10 Downing Street. He was later a speechwriter and political secretary to William Hague, Major’s successor as Conservative Party leader.

Osborne was elected as the Conservative MP for Tatton, Cheshire, in June 2001, becoming the youngest Conservative MP at the time. His political ascent continued with appointments to Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2004 and then Shadow Chancellor in 2005, at the age of 33. In 2005, he successfully managed David Cameron’s campaign for Leader of the Conservative Party. Following the 2010 general election, he played a key role in negotiating the formation of the Coalition Government and was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, a position he held until July 2016. He distinguished himself as the youngest Chancellor appointed since Randolph Churchill in 1886. During his tenure as Chancellor, he implemented significant austerity policies aimed at reducing the budget deficit and spearheaded the Northern Powerhouse initiative to stimulate economic growth in northern England.

After leaving Parliament in 2017, Osborne transitioned to roles beyond traditional politics. He served as editor of the “Evening Standard” from 2017 to 2020. He has also taken on prominent positions such as Chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership since 2016 and Chair of the British Museum since 2021. His career further diversified with roles as a William C. Edwards Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution and a Dean’s Fellow at the Stanford Graduate School for Business, contributing his expertise in British politics, economic policy, and international affairs.
