Giancarlo Esposito

Giancarlo Giuseppe Alessandro Esposito was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on April 26, 1958, to an Italian carpenter father and an African-American opera singer mother. His early life included time in Rome, Italy, before his family settled in Manhattan when he was six. Esposito’s theatrical background led him to Broadway at age eight, appearing in “Maggie Flynn” in 1966. He continued stage work through the 1960s and early 1970s, transitioning into film and television roles in the 1980s. A significant turning point in his career was his portrayal of Agent Mike Giardello in the TV series “Homicide: Life on the Street” in 1998, establishing him as a prominent character actor.

Esposito gained widespread recognition for his role as Gus Fring in the AMC crime drama series “Breaking Bad” (2009–2011), a character he reprised in “Better Call Saul” (2017–2022). This role earned him critical acclaim, including two Critics’ Choice Television Awards and multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations. His extensive filmography includes collaborations with Spike Lee in films such as “School Daze” (1988), “Do the Right Thing” (1989), “Mo’ Better Blues” (1990), and “Malcolm X” (1992). Other notable film appearances include “The Usual Suspects” (1995), “The Jungle Book” (2016), and upcoming projects like “Captain America: Brave New World” (2025).

Beyond acting, Esposito has also made contributions as a director and producer. He made his directorial debut with “Gospel Hill” (2008), a film that garnered multiple awards. His production company, Quiet Hand Productions, focuses on creating “conscious content” that is inspirational. He recently directed and starred in “The Show” (2017) and continues to take on diverse roles in television series like “The Boys” (2019–present), “The Mandalorian” (2019–2023), and “Parish” (2024), where he also serves as an executive producer.
