Naveen Jain was born in 1959 in Uttar Pradesh, India, and grew up in New Delhi and surrounding villages. He pursued an engineering degree from IIT Roorkee, graduating in 1979. Shortly after, in 1983, he relocated to the United States. His early career included a position at Burroughs (now Unisys) and later at Microsoft, where he worked on operating systems such as OS/2, MS-DOS, Windows NT, and Windows 95. He earned three patents related to Windows 95 and was involved in the launch of Microsoft Network (MSN).
In 1996, Jain founded InfoSpace, an internet company that provided content and services like phone directories, maps, and stock market information to websites and mobile devices. InfoSpace experienced significant growth and went public in December 1998, raising $75 million. Following the dot-com bubble crash, InfoSpace faced financial difficulties and legal challenges related to stock options and reporting practices. He was dismissed from his CEO role in 2002, and subsequent lawsuits resulted in a significant settlement.
