Grant Williams was born on November 30, 1998, in Houston, Texas, and later moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. He attended Providence Day School in Charlotte, where he excelled in basketball, averaging 18 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game as a junior in 2014–15. He played alongside future NBA player Devon Dotson during his high school career. As a highly-rated three-star recruit, Williams committed to the University of Tennessee, where he continued to develop his skills and establish himself as a prominent collegiate athlete.
At the University of Tennessee, Williams played college basketball for the Tennessee Volunteers, earning All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors three times during his freshman, sophomore, and junior years. He was notably awarded back-to-back SEC Player of the Year honors in the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons, a distinction not achieved since 1995. He led the Volunteers to significant NCAA tournament appearances, securing a third seed in 2018 and a second seed in 2019. Williams graduated from Tennessee with a degree in business in three years.
Williams was drafted 22nd overall in the 2019 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics, signing a four-year, $11.8 million rookie-scale contract. He debuted professionally on October 23, 2019, and made his first career start on December 4, 2019. Over his tenure with the Celtics, he steadily increased his statistical averages, culminating in career-best numbers during the 2021–22 NBA season with 7.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. He played a key role in the Celtics’ run to the 2022 NBA Finals. In February 2023, Williams was elected First Vice President of the National Basketball Players Association, demonstrating his leadership off the court. He joined the Dallas Mavericks in 2023 and was subsequently traded to the Charlotte Hornets in February 2024. In November 2024, Williams sustained a season-ending injury to his right knee.
