Gregg Williams

Gregg Williams, born on July 15, 1958, in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, has established a notable career in Football coaching marked by significant defensive achievements and leadership roles. He began his journey in football as a quarterback at Northeast Missouri State University before transitioning to coaching, starting as an assistant at his alma mater, Excelsior Springs High School, and later as head coach at Belton High School. His entry into professional football came in 1990 with the Houston Oilers, where he served as a Special Teams coach and later as linebackers coach through 1996. This early experience laid the groundwork for his future success, instilling a deep understanding of defensive strategies.

Williams’ career progressed as he took on defensive coordinator roles, first with the Tennessee Titans (1997–2000), where his defense led the league in total defense and helped the team reach Super Bowl XXXIV. He then served as head coach for the Buffalo Bills (2001–2003) and later as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Washington Redskins (2004–2007), consistently developing top-tier defensive units. A significant highlight of his career was his tenure as defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints (2009–2011), during which he architected the aggressive defense that contributed to their Super Bowl XLIV championship in 2009. His strategic insights also led to roles with the Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams, and the Cleveland Browns, where he served as interim head coach in 2018, achieving a 5–3 record.

Following his NFL career, Williams transitioned to the UFL/XFL as defensive coordinator for the DC Defenders (2023–2025). In 2025, he accepted the position of defensive coordinator for Tennessee State University, returning to the collegiate ranks. Throughout his career, Williams has been recognized for his development of talent, coaching two AP Defensive Rookie of the Year winners: Jevon Kearse (1999, Titans) and Aaron Donald (2014, Rams). He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 and established the Gregg Williams Foundation in 2004, which has contributed over $2,000,000 to benefit the Excelsior Springs community.
