Gunther

Beginning his professional wrestling career on November 19, 2005, Gunther, then known under monikers including Big Van Walter, established a formidable presence across the independent circuit. His tenure at Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) in Germany included three reigns as wXw Unified World Wrestling Champion and four as wXw World Tag Team Champion. He also served as the head trainer of the wXw Wrestling Academy from 2015 to 2020. Gunther’s dominance extended to Progress Wrestling in the UK, where he secured the Progress Atlas Championship twice and the Progress World Championship once, and Over the Top Wrestling (OTT) in Ireland, earning the OTT World Championship.

In North America, he captured the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) World Championship in 2018, all while adhering to his motto, ‘Die Matte ist Heilig’ (The Mat is Sacred), reflecting his dedication to the sport’s purity and combat-oriented narrative. In November 2018, Gunther signed with WWE, initially assigned to the NXT UK brand. He swiftly became a dominant force, capturing the NXT United Kingdom Championship in April 2019 and holding the title for a record-breaking 870 days, the longest reign for that championship. In January 2022, upon transitioning to the NXT brand, his ring name was changed to Gunther, marking a new chapter in his WWE career.

He subsequently secured his first World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam, a testament to his consistent high-impact performances. Gunther has since tied the record for most World Heavyweight Championship reigns, currently holding two, and remains a central and compelling figure at the forefront of the company’s global programming, consistently delivering excellence and disciplined athleticism.
