United States Matt Taven is an American professional wrestler and trainer, known for his work in major promotions including Ring of Honor, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Impact Wrestling, and All Elite Wrestling. He has achieved numerous championships, establishing himself as a significant figure in professional wrestling.
Matt Taven has been a prominent figure in Ring of Honor, holding multiple championships including the ROH World Championship, ROH World Television Championship, ROH World Tag Team Championship, and ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship. He was also the winner of the 2013 Top Prospects Tournament and is recognized as a ROH Triple Crown Champion and Grand Slam Champion.
Taven worked with NJPW through ROH's relationship with the Japanese promotion. He participated in the World Tag League in 2014 and 2015, and won the IWGP Tag Team Championship with Michael Bennett in 2015. He also took part in the ROH/NJPW co-promoted "Honor Rising" tour in 2019.
Through ROH's working relationship with CMLL, Taven debuted for the Mexican promotion in 2016 and returned for several tours until 2019. During his time in CMLL, he won the NWA World Historic Welterweight Championship. He also participated in the International Gran Prix tournaments.
In 2022, Matt Taven debuted in Impact Wrestling as part of the "Honor No More" stable. He, along with Mike Bennett, captured the Impact World Tag Team Championship.
Matt Taven made his AEW debut in October 2022. He has competed on AEW shows like Rampage and Dynamite, and has been part of stables such as "The Undisputed Kingdom," winning the ROH World Tag Team Championship (which is also AEW-affiliated).
In his early career, Taven was active in the Northeastern independent circuit, including Chaotic Wrestling. He held the Chaotic Wrestling New England Championship twice and the Chaotic Wrestling Tag Team Championship once with Vinny Marseglia. He also won the Chaotic Wrestling New England Championship Tournament in 2012.
Taven has held the ICW Tag Team Championship once with Rhett Titus.
Taven won the NWA On Fire Tag Team Championship once with Julian Starr.
He secured the NEW Heavyweight Championship three times and the NEW Tag Team Championship once with Brian Anthony.
Taven was the winner of the Robbie Ellis Tournament of Super Juniors in 2012.
Taven has held the PWR Tag Team Championship once with Mike Bennett.
Early in his career, Taven competed for Top Rope Promotions, where he won the TRP Heavyweight Championship twice and the Killer Kowalski Cup in 2010.
Matthew Marinelli, known professionally as Matt Taven, was born on March 20, 1985, in Derry, New Hampshire. He began his professional wrestling career in March 2008. Early in his career, Taven primarily competed on the Northeastern United States independent circuit, working for promotions such as Top Rope Promotions (TRP) and Collision Pro Wrestling (CPW) in Massachusetts.
Taven made his debut for Ring of Honor (ROH) in May 2009. His career in ROH progressed significantly when he won the Top Prospects Tournament in 2013, which earned him a full-time contract and an ROH World Television Championship match. He defeated Adam Cole to win the ROH World Television Championship at the 11th Anniversary Show, marking a turning point in his career. His reign as World Television Champion lasted 287 days, setting a company record for the most title defenses with 12. In 2014, he formed “The Kingdom” with Michael Bennett, winning the ROH World Tag Team Championship in 2015. He later led a new iteration of The Kingdom, winning the inaugural ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship in 2016. In 2019, Taven achieved the ROH World Championship at G1 Supercard, becoming the second ROH Grand Slam winner.
Beyond ROH, Taven has also competed internationally. He worked with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) from 2014 to 2015 and again in 2019, where he held the IWGP Tag Team Championship with Michael Bennett. He also wrestled for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in Mexico from 2016 to 2019, winning the NWA World Historic Welterweight Championship. In 2022, Taven debuted in Impact Wrestling as part of the “Honor No More” stable, where he won the Impact World Tag Team Championship. He later joined All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in October 2022, and has continued to compete in Ring of Honor, which became AEW’s sister promotion, notably as part of “The Undisputed Kingdom” stable where he won the ROH World Tag Team Championship for a third time.
