Gus Bradley

Gus Bradley, born on July 5, 1966, in Zumbrota, Minnesota, has established a significant career in Football coaching. He began his collegiate career at North Dakota State as a safety and punter from 1984-1988, contributing to three NCAA Division II Football Championships (1984, 1987-1988) and earning four academic All-North Central Conference selections. After earning bachelor’s degrees in business administration and physical education, and a master’s in athletic administration from NDSU, he transitioned into coaching. His early coaching roles included graduate assistant at North Dakota State (1990-1991), defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Fort Lewis College (1992-1995), and head coach there briefly in 1996. He then returned to North Dakota State for ten seasons (1996-2005) in various defensive capacities, notably leading the Great West Football Conference in scoring defense, pass defense, total defense, and turnover margin as defensive coordinator in 2005.

Bradley’s NFL coaching journey began with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, serving as linebackers coach (2006-2007) and defensive quality control (2008), where he helped LB Derrick Brooks earn two Pro Bowl nods. He gained significant prominence as the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks from 2009-2012, playing a crucial role in developing the “Legion of Boom” secondary. Under his guidance, the Seahawks’ defense ranked among the league’s best, culminating in 2012 with the top scoring defense and fourth-best total defense. This success led to his first NFL head coaching opportunity with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2013-2016. Though his tenure as head coach was challenging, his defensive units consistently showed strong performance. After Jacksonville, Bradley continued his defensive coordinator roles with the Los Angeles Chargers (2017-2020), Las Vegas Raiders (2021), and Indianapolis Colts (2022-2024), consistently developing Pro Bowl-caliber defensive players and maintaining top-tier defensive metrics.

In 2025, Bradley joined the San Francisco 49ers as assistant head coach of defense, reuniting with Robert Saleh, whom he had previously mentored. This move leverages their extensive shared history and complementary coaching styles to revitalize the 49ers’ defense. His career trajectory showcases a consistent focus on defensive excellence and a track record of developing impactful players across multiple NFL franchises.
