About

Guy Torry was born on January 5, 1969, in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Southeast Missouri State University, the same alma mater as fellow comedian Cedric The Entertainer. During his college years, Torry’s comedic talent was evident as he frequently held impromptu comedy “slams” in dorm breakrooms, leaving his peers entertained. Following in his brother Joe Torry’s footsteps, he moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in comedy and film. His career was significantly influenced by witnessing Russell Simmons’ HBO show “Def Comedy Jam” around 1992, which inspired him to pursue stand-up comedy professionally. After two years of honing his craft, Torry made his national television debut on “Def Comedy Jam.” He subsequently participated in the “Def Comedy Jam Tour,” performing in cities across the United States. Beyond his performing career, Guy Torry actively supports his brother’s “Give Back The Love” Foundation, a St. Louis-based charity dedicated to providing basic necessities such as clothes and school supplies to disadvantaged children.

Torry transitioned from stand-up comedy to acting, establishing a notable career in both television and film. His filmography includes a significant role as Lamont in the critically acclaimed 1998 film “American History X.” He also appeared in “Don’t Say a Word” (2001), “Runaway Jury” (2003), and “Pearl Harbor” (2001), among other films. On television, he has been featured in series such as “Premium Blend,” “Comic View,” “Showtime at the Apollo,” “The X-Files,” and “NYPD Blue.” He lent his voice to the animated Nickelodeon series “As Told By Ginger.” Early in his Hollywood career, Torry secured a production assistant role on the Fox comedy series “Martin,” where his quick wit led him to become a contributing writer for the show. He continued to write for other sitcoms including “Minor Adjustments” and “Moesha.”

A significant milestone in Guy Torry’s career was the creation of “Phat Tuesdays,” a weekly stand-up comedy showcase he hosted and produced at The Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Launched in 1995, “Phat Tuesdays” provided a crucial platform for African American comedians and became a hub for the comedy elite, regularly attracting figures such as Eddie Murphy, Chris Tucker, and Chris Rock. The showcase ran for a decade, concluding in 2005. Its legacy was celebrated in 2022 with an Amazon television program of the same name, highlighting its impact on the careers of numerous legendary Black comedians. Torry’s leadership in creating this event solidified his reputation not only as a performer but also as a significant figure in fostering comedic talent within the industry.
