Born on September 11, 1981, in Belgorod, Russia, Yulia Zagoruychenko began dancing at age four with Russian Folklore ensemble dancing. Her parents enrolled her in classes after observing her ability to mimic movements from television. She transitioned to ballroom dancing at age seven. At age eleven, Zagoruychenko began teaching other children to financially assist her family. In 1993, at the age of 12, she secured her first major title as the Russian Junior National Champion. Due to financial constraints, she focused her training solely on Latin dance at age 16. At 21, she relocated to America and partnered with Maxim Kozhevnikov, achieving the title of US National Professional Champions together.
In the fall of 2007, Yulia Zagoruychenko formed a dance partnership with Riccardo Cocchi. This collaboration led to their first World Latin Dance Championship win in 2010. They subsequently earned their eighth World Latin Dance Championship title in 2017. Their partnership resulted in numerous victories, including five consecutive US National Professional Latin Champions titles at the US Open Dance Competition. They maintained a global ranking as number one in Professional Latin dance. In October 2019, Zagoruychenko and Cocchi announced their retirement from international competition, concluding with the World Professional Latin Champions in Miami. They continue to provide instructional dance content through the Koros app and perform as guest dancers at events, such as the Shining Star Cup in 2023.
Beyond her competitive career, Zagoruychenko was recognized in 2011 as an “American By Choice” by the Carnegie Corporation, an honor extended to distinguished U.S. immigrants. Her personal life progressed alongside her professional one; after ten years of professional partnership, Yulia Zagoruychenko and Riccardo Cocchi married in 2017 and have one son. She cites diverse influences from various art forms and artists, including Cyd Charisse, Fred Astaire, Diana Vishneva, Gaynor Fairweather, Donnie Burns, Jose Feliciano, Tina Turner, Andrea Bocelli, Christina Aguilera, and dance companies like Pilobolus and Alvin Ailey.
