Henry Phillips

Henry Phillips was born on November 14, 1969, in Los Angeles, California. He began playing guitar at the age of eight and was influenced by musicians like Billy Joel in his youth. Phillips initially pursued a career in music, which gradually evolved to incorporate humorous songwriting and stand-up comedy as he discovered his ability to connect with audiences through his awkward stage presence and dry wit. During the 1990s and early 2000s, he performed in Los Angeles comedy clubs, establishing himself with a style that included self-deprecating humor and relatable storytelling.

Phillips gained wider recognition through various performances and projects. In 2005, he appeared on ‘Comedy Central Presents’. He co-wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed film “Punching the Clown” in 2009, which received the Audience Award at the Slamdance Film Festival. This film led to a sequel, “Punching Henry,” released in 2016. Simultaneously, he developed a strong online presence with web series like “Henry’s Kitchen,” a satirical cooking show lauded by critics for its intentional ineptitude, and “You and Your Fucking Coffee,” which he directed and starred in from 2013 to 2016. From 2016 to 2019, Phillips also had a recurring role as John Stafford in the television series “Silicon Valley.”

His career also includes several comedy albums, such as “On the Shoulders of Freaks” (1997), “Why Haven’t I Heard from You?” (2005), and “L.A. Dream” (2010), demonstrating his consistent output in musical comedy. In 2014, he performed his debut hour-long comedy special, “Neither Here Nor There,” which was released as an album and streamed on Vimeo on Demand in 2016. Phillips is also known for producing cooking content on Twitch and through his “Henry’s Kitchen” web series, which was later adapted into “Henry’s Kitchen: Masterclass” for Thrillist from September to November 2018. He has authored two cookbooks, further extending his comical cooking persona.
