About

Hubert Ira Davis Jr. was born on May 17, 1970, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He attended Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia. Davis then enrolled at the University of North Carolina, playing basketball from 1988 to 1992 under Coach Dean Smith. During his collegiate career, the team achieved a 102-37 record, won the ACC Tournaments in 1989 and 1991, and reached the Final Four in 1991. Davis holds the UNC record for career three-point percentage at .435. He scored 1,615 career points, averaging 11.8 points per game. In his senior year, he averaged 21.4 points and earned second-team All-ACC honors, including a career-high 35 points against Duke in March 1992. He graduated in 1992 with a degree in criminal justice.

Following his college career, Davis was selected by the New York Knicks as the 20th overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft. He played in the NBA for 12 seasons, from 1992 to 2004, for teams including the New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and New Jersey Nets. He scored 5,583 points during his NBA career, averaging 8.2 points per game. Davis is second in NBA history for career three-point percentage at .441, behind Steve Kerr. He holds franchise records for single-season and career three-point field goal percentages for both the Knicks and the Mavericks. After retiring from playing, Davis spent seven years as a college basketball analyst and co-host for ESPN’s College GameDay program, providing commentary and insights into the sport.

In 2012, Davis joined the coaching staff at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina, as an assistant coach under Roy Williams. He also served as the head coach for the UNC junior varsity program from 2013-2019. During his tenure as an assistant, the Tar Heels won the NCAA championship in 2017 and made Final Four appearances in 2016 and 2017. On April 5, 2021, Davis was named the 20th head coach of the UNC men’s basketball program, becoming the first Black head coach in the program’s history. In his first season as head coach (2021-22), he led the Tar Heels to the NCAA East Regional championship and a spot in the national championship game. He earned National and ACC Coach-of-the-Year honors and has since led UNC to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, an ACC regular-season title in 2024, and was named the 2024 ACC Coach of the Year.
