Hugh Mcelhenny

Hugh McElhenny established himself as an All-America halfback at the University of Washington, where he set multiple school and conference records with his elusive running style. His collegiate career included a notable 100-yard punt return against USC in 1951, showcasing his exceptional speed and agility. McElhenny led the Huskies in rushing for all three seasons he played, accumulating an impressive 2,499 career rushing yards. Prior to his time at Washington, he was a key player on the undefeated 1948 Compton Junior College team that won the Junior Rose Bowl, beginning his journey of consistent athletic excellence.

McElhenny garnered five Pro Bowl selections with the 49ers in 1952, 1953, 1956, 1957, and 1958, solidifying his status as a premier NFL talent. McElhenny’s career evolved further when he joined the expansion Minnesota Vikings in 1961. He delivered a standout season with the Vikings, accumulating 1,069 combined yards and earning his sixth Pro Bowl selection that same year. He then played for the New York Giants in 1963, contributing to their appearance in the NFL Championship Game.

The San Francisco 49ers honored his legacy by retiring his iconic jersey number 39, and he was celebrated as a charter member of the San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame in 2009. Additionally, the University of Washington inducted him into their Husky Hall of Fame in 1979. Beyond the field, McElhenny remained involved in the sport, serving as a color commentator for 49ers radio broadcasts from 1966 to 1972 and playing a role in efforts to bring an NFL franchise to Seattle in the early 1970s.
