Irish rugby union player Hugo Keenan competes for Leinster Rugby and the Ireland national rugby union team as a fullback or wing. Previously, he was Ireland’s fly-half for their national rugby sevens squad.
Keenan attended Blackrock College for his secondary education. As a member of the squad that won the 2014 Leinster Schools Senior Cup, Keenan was known for his running, passing, and try-scoring abilities, among other things. For the Ireland under-20 national rugby union team, Keenan played the wing position. Throughout the 2016 Under-20 Six Nations, he started every game for the Ireland Under-20 squad. Additionally, he began every game of the 2016 World Rugby under-20 Championship, which included Ireland’s historic triumph against New Zealand.
Early in 2017, Keenan received a call to report to the Ireland national rugby sevens team camp. In the 2017 Grand Prix Series, Keenan played for the Ireland sevens squad. In Ireland’s victory at the 2017 Moscow Sevens, he scored numerous tries, including an important one in Ireland’s 28-21 semifinal victory over Russia. On October 24, 2020, in a Six Nations game against Italy, Keenan made his international debut for Ireland. He started on the wing and contributed two tries to a 50-17 victory. The next 17 international matches (2020–2022) were started by Keenan, who scored tries against Georgia, Italy, the United States, England, and New Zealand. For his outstanding effort in Ireland’s victory against England in the 2022 Six Nations, Keenan received praise. By March 2022, he was widely considered to be Rob Kearney’s successor at fullback for Ireland.
