Paul McStay MBE, affectionately nicknamed ‘the Maestro’ by adoring Celtic fans, is a Scottish former professional footballer who spent the entirety of his career at Celtic, making him a true club legend. McStay spent 16 successful years in Glasgow, appearing over 500 times for Celtic and scoring 57 goals. The born leader had the honour of captaining both Scotland and Celtic. He was capped 76 times for his country and scored nine goals. McStay was also the driving force in helping Celtic win three league titles and four Scottish Cups during his time at the club. Individually, McStay won a ton of individual accolades, featuring on the Ballon d’Or shortlist and winning SFWA Footballer of the Year.
Although Mcstay enjoyed many fine seasons at Celtic, 1987 was a standout year for the Maestro. When McStay signed a five-year contract at Celtic in this year, his already fantastic playing standard went up another level. In 1987, he won both the SPFA and Scottish Football Writers player of the year awards, as the icon helped the super club to a League and Cup double.
McStay now runs Maestro Sports, a successful start-up software company specialising in sport coaching and management, showing that the Scot is a savvy businessman. With an amazing playing career and now a successful software business, the Celtic star continues to be a leader wherever he goes.
