Istvan Peni was born on February 14, 1997, in Budapest, Hungary. He developed an early interest in shooting sports and subsequently joined the Újpesti Sports Club (Újpesti Torna Egylet) in Budapest. His training was overseen by coaches József Tóth and Edit Kissné Oroszi. Peni’s career began to gain international recognition in his youth, demonstrating consistent performance in various rifle events.
Peni’s competitive journey includes participation in the 10m air rifle (AR60), 50m rifle prone (FR60PR), and 50m rifle 3 positions (FR3X40) events. A significant early milestone was his debut at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, where he competed at the age of 17. At this event, he secured a bronze medal in the boys’ 10m air rifle. Further demonstrating his capabilities, Peni, alongside his mixed international team partner Hadir Mekhimad of Egypt, won a gold medal in the mixed rifle team competition during the same Youth Olympics.
Throughout his career, Peni has accumulated a comprehensive medal record across various international stages. This includes a silver medal at the 2018 World Championships in Changwon in the 300m rifle 3 positions event and a gold medal at the 2023 World Championships in Baku for 300m standard rifle open. He has also achieved gold medals at the European Games in 2023 in both the 10m air rifle team and 50m rifle 3 positions team events. His consistent presence and multiple podium finishes at World Cups and European Championships underscore his sustained performance in the sport.
