His collegiate career continued at the University of Memphis, where he played for the Memphis Tigers from 2017 to 2021. Russell demonstrated exceptional performance, leading the Tigers with 123 tackles in his final year, which earned him a first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection in 2021. This period showcased his consistent effort and defensive capabilities within a competitive collegiate environment.
Russell entered the National Football League as an undrafted free agent in 2022, signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on May 2, 2022. During his tenure with the Buccaneers, he made his NFL debut against the Baltimore Ravens on October 27, 2022, playing 26 snaps. His time with the team involved periods on the active roster and practice squad, reflecting the dynamic nature of an NFL career. Notable plays include a blocked punt return for a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers in Week 17 of the 2024 NFL season and a sack against quarterback Bryce Young. He also recorded an interception against Tanner Morgan during the 2023 preseason.
