Darius Rose, known professionally as Jackie Cox, was born on April 10, 1985, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to a Canadian father and an Iranian mother. He pursued higher education at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in theater before relocating to New York with the intent of pursuing a professional theater career. His journey into drag began in 2009, notably playing the title role in a production of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” at Theatre Out at the Empire Theater in Santa Ana, California. His first performance as Jackie Cox took place at the “So You Think You Can Drag” competition at New World Stages in New York. The stage name “Jackie Cox” originated from a high school codename used for a disliked girl with initials “J.C.”.
Jackie Cox gained wider recognition as a contestant on the twelfth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which premiered on January 23, 2020. During her participation, she became the first contestant in the show’s history to present a Muslim-inspired outfit on a “stars and stripes” patriotic theme episode, wearing a red-striped kaftan with a blue hijab outlined with 50 silver stars. Despite controversy surrounding a guest judge’s comments on her outfit, she advanced in the competition, ultimately securing a 5th-place finish. Post-Drag Race, Jackie Cox moved into television, appearing as herself on “Days of Our Lives” in 2022, both in and out of drag as Darius Rose, in a storyline involving a wedding crash.
Her career includes notable television appearances on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” in 2017 and “What Would You Do?” in 2018. She has also been featured in various web series and music videos. Beyond her entertainment work, she leverages her platform for advocacy, focusing on the #BlackLivesMatter movement and voter registration for young and queer individuals. Cox is actively involved in supporting local businesses in her Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in New York City, demonstrating a commitment to her community. She identifies as gay and gender-expansive, using he/him/his, she/her/hers, and they/them/theirs pronouns out of drag, and preferring she/her/hers pronouns as Jackie Cox.
