Jackie Zeman

Jacklyn Lee Zeman, born on March 6, 1953, in Englewood, New Jersey, embarked on her artistic journey studying classical ballet at age five. At 15, she was accepted into the New Jersey Dance Company and simultaneously received a scholarship from New York University, where she pursued a major in dance. Zeman transitioned from dance to acting, initially taking on small roles before securing a regular position in the ABC daytime soap opera ‘One Life to Live’ as Lana McClain from 1976 to 1977. This early experience laid the groundwork for her extensive career in daytime drama, showcasing her ability to adapt and excel in the demanding environment of television production.

Zeman’s career defining role came later in 1977 when she was cast as Bobbie Spencer on ABC’s ‘General Hospital.’ She portrayed this character consistently for 45 years, from 1977 until 2023, appearing in 1928 episodes and becoming a central figure in the series. Her portrayal earned her significant recognition, including four Daytime Emmy Award nominations: three for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (1981, 1995, 1997) and one for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (1998). Beyond ‘General Hospital,’ Zeman also appeared in films such as ‘National Lampoon’s Class Reunion’ (1982) and ‘Young Doctors in Love’ (1982), demonstrating her versatility across different genres. In recent years, she also held a regular role as Sofia Madison in the streaming series ‘The Bay’ from 2010 to 2023, which garnered her another Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Daytime Fiction Program.

Throughout her career, Zeman expanded her portfolio to include off-Broadway productions and co-hosting ABC-TV affiliate morning shows across the USA. She also authored articles and a book titled “Beauty on the Go” (1986). Zeman’s dedication to her craft and her enduring presence in television made her a beloved figure in the industry. She maintained a consistent presence on ‘General Hospital’ even after 2010, appearing on a recurring basis until her passing. She died on May 9, 2023, at the age of 70, following a short battle with cancer.
