Born on May 13, 1988, in Wolverhampton, England, Jai Herbert embarked on his mixed martial arts journey after an initial 14-year career as a scaffolder. He began training in MMA when a local gym opened, progressing from an amateur record of 9-1 to his professional debut in 2015. Herbert quickly established himself in the sport, securing consecutive second-round knockouts with Full Contact Contender before signing a four-fight contract with BAMMA. His early career saw him gain experience and build a foundation in the sport, preparing him for higher levels of competition. He showcased his capabilities with wins by knockout and submission, although he also experienced his first professional loss during this period.
Herbert’s career advanced significantly when he joined Cage Warriors, a prominent European MMA promotion. He made his debut in 2018, winning by unanimous decision at Cage Warriors 94. A pivotal moment came in 2019 when he claimed the vacant Cage Warriors Lightweight Championship at Cage Warriors 106, a title he successfully defended against Cain Carrizosa at Cage Warriors 109 with a first-round knockout. This success led to his signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in January 2020. His UFC debut was scheduled for March 2020, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He subsequently made his UFC debut later that year.
Throughout his UFC tenure, Herbert has faced various challenges, demonstrating resilience and commitment to his fighting career. He has competed in numerous UFC events, securing significant wins, including a first-round TKO against Khama Worthy in October 2021 and unanimous decision victories over Kyle Nelson in July 2022 and Rolando Bedoya in August 2024. Herbert’s dedication is evident in his decision to leave his scaffolding job to focus solely on his UFC career. His fighting style, rooted in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is characterized by powerful striking and a strategic approach, earning him the nickname “The Black Country Banger” due to his knockout victories and regional origins.
