Award-winning actor, director, and producer Jaime Camil is one of Mexico’s brightest stars. He’s particularly well-known for his role as Rogelio de la Vega, one of the stars of Jane the Virgin, a satirical American rom-com series that has won many awards, including the prestigious Peabody Award, and been honoured by the American Film Institute. For his part in the show, Camil has been named Best Comedy Actor at the Teen Choice Awards twice.
Yet Jane the Virgin is just one part of Camil’s long career. Since starting out working in radio during the early 1990s, he has proved his versatility, releasing albums, appearing in soap operas and major musicals, and becoming as highly regarded in the United States as he is in his native Mexico. His film career began in 2003, and he starred in numerous movies, including 7 dias, which bought him the Diosa del plata award for Best Supporting Actor. On television, his major acting break came in 2007 with the role of Fernando Mendiola Saenz in La fea mas bella, a comedy series akin to Ugly Betty, which became the most popular show in Mexico that year and saw Camil nominated for Best Actor at the TVyNovelas Awards.
Camil is also a noted stage actor and performed on Broadway in 2005 with the show Latinologues. His theatre work has also won him awards in Mexico, including the APT Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Ever busy, his more recent projects have included voice roles such as Jorge Chavez in Bojack Horseman and Disney’s Elena of Avalor.
