Mark Jake Johnson Weinberger, known professionally as Jake Johnson, was born on May 28, 1978, in Evanston, Illinois. He developed an early interest in comedy, admiring the Second City improv troupe. Educationally, Johnson attended the University of Iowa before transferring to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts for dramatic writing, where his play “Cousins” earned him the John Golden Playwriting Prize in 2002. Early in his career, before achieving mainstream recognition, Johnson supported his artistic pursuits through various jobs, including working as a waiter and production assistant in Los Angeles. During this period, he honed his comedic skills as part of the sketch comedy troupe The Midwesterners, which drew inspiration from HBO’s “Mr. Show with Bob and David.” These formative experiences provided a foundation for his multifaceted career in entertainment.
Johnson’s career gained significant momentum with his role as Nick Miller in the Fox comedy series “New Girl,” which aired from 2011 to 2018. This role brought him widespread acclaim and a Teen Choice Award nomination. Beyond acting, Johnson has expanded his contributions to the industry as a producer and writer. He starred as gambler Eddie Garrett in the 2017 Netflix feature film “Win It All,” a project he also produced and co-wrote with director Joe Swanberg.
