Guillermo Gustavo “Willy” Hernangómez Geuer was born on May 27, 1994, in Madrid, Spain. He began his professional basketball career with Real Madrid’s reserve team in 2011, showcasing early promise. After two seasons with the reserve squad, he was loaned to Cajasol Sevilla from 2013 to 2015, where he continued to develop his skills. Upon returning to Real Madrid in 2015, Hernangómez played for their senior team during the 2015–16 season, averaging 5.7 points and 3.3 rebounds across 34 games in the Spanish ACB League. His performance led to him being drafted into the NBA.
Hernangómez transitioned to the NBA in 2016 after being selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 35th overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, with his rights subsequently traded to the New York Knicks. He made his NBA debut on October 25, 2016, and quickly made an impact, earning NBA Rookie of the Month honors for April 2017 and being named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team the same year. Throughout his NBA tenure, he played for the Charlotte Hornets (2018–2020) and the New Orleans Pelicans (2020–2023). A notable milestone includes achieving a career-high 29 points against Philadelphia in January 2022 and 17 rebounds against Portland in February 2021. In July 2023, he returned to Spain to play for FC Barcelona.
Internationally, Hernangómez has been a key player for the Spain national basketball team. He earned a gold medal at EuroBasket 2015, a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and another bronze at EuroBasket 2017. He was part of the gold-medal-winning team at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup and achieved another gold medal and the FIBA EuroBasket MVP award at EuroBasket 2022. His consistent high-level performance across domestic leagues, the NBA, and international competitions highlights his versatility and value as a basketball player.
