James David Maslow was born on July 16, 1990, in New York, New York, and raised in La Jolla, California. His early exposure to performing arts began at age six with the San Diego Children’s Choir, followed by a role in the San Diego Opera’s production of ‘La bohème’ at ten. He honed his acting skills at an acting camp at La Jolla Playhouse and secured his first agent at 14. Maslow attended the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SDSCPA), featuring in lead roles such as Danny Zuko in “Grease” (2004) and Marius in “Les Misérables” (2006). He later graduated from the musical theatre department of Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) in 2007.
Maslow’s career gained significant momentum with his television debut as Shane in an episode of Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” in 2008. Two years later, he landed the role of James Diamond in the Nickelodeon series “Big Time Rush,” which also led to the formation of the real-life boy band Big Time Rush alongside Kendall Schmidt, Carlos Pena Jr., and Logan Henderson. The band released their debut album, “B.T.R.,” in 2010, selling 67,000 copies in its first week and later achieving RIAA Gold certification. Their subsequent albums, “Elevate” (2011) and “24/Seven” (2013), further solidified their musical success, with Maslow co-writing several tracks. The band embarked on successful tours, including the Summer Break Tour and the Big Time Rush Live 2014 World Tour.
Transitioning into a solo career, Maslow participated in the 18th season of “Dancing with the Stars” in 2014, reaching fourth place and earning the season’s first perfect score for his contemporary dance. He continued to broaden his acting portfolio with roles in films like “The Frozen Ground” (2013) and “Seeds of Yesterday” (2015), as well as a main role in the Sony Crackle series “Sequestered.” As a solo musical artist, he released his debut single “Lies” in 2015, followed by “Circles” in the same year, and his album “How I Like It” in 2017. He also competed in “Celebrity Big Brother” in 2018. More recently, Maslow has released singles such as “Love U Sober” (2019) and appeared in films like “We Need to Talk” (2022) and “Holiday Twist” (2023).
