James David Rodriguez Rubio was born on July 12, 1991, in Cúcuta, Colombia, and spent his early years in Ibagué. He began his professional football journey with Envigado in the Colombian second division in 2006, helping them achieve promotion to the first division in 2007. At just 14 years old, he became one of the youngest Colombian players to debut professionally. His talent quickly led him to Argentina, where he joined Banfield in 2008. There, he became the youngest foreign player to score in the Argentine league and contributed to Banfield’s historic Apertura championship win in 2009. His performances in the Copa Libertadores further brought him to international attention, consistently demonstrating his playmaking skills and goal-scoring ability.
His European career commenced in 2010 when he moved to Porto. Over three years, he secured multiple trophies, including three Primeira Liga titles and the UEFA Europa League in 2011. His individual accolades at Porto included the LPFP Breakthrough Player of the Year in 2012 and the Portuguese Golden Ball in the same year, making him the youngest recipient of the award. In 2014, a high-profile transfer brought him to Real Madrid for approximately £63 million, where he quickly made an impact, being named in the La Liga Team of the Season and winning La Liga Best Midfielder in his debut year. On the international stage, James has been a central figure for the Colombia national team, captaining the U-20 squad to a Toulon Tournament victory in 2011 and earning the Golden Boot at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He also played in two other World Cups and multiple Copa América tournaments, reaching the final in 2024 and receiving the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, surpassing Lionel Messi’s assist record in a single edition.
