Janie Dee

Janie Dee was born on June 20, 1962, in Old Windsor, Berkshire. She began her professional training at the Arts Educational School in Chiswick, London. Following her education, Dee started her career as a dancer, later moving to Rome, Italy. In Rome, she taught dance, pursued singing lessons, and became fluent in Italian. Her West End debut occurred in 1986 in the revival of “Cabaret,” where she played Gertie and understudied Sally Bowles. This early experience set the foundation for a versatile career in musical theatre and dramatic roles.

Dee’s career saw significant progression with her performance as Carrie Pipperidge in the 1993 Royal National Theatre’s production of “Carousel,” for which she received an Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical. She developed a notable working relationship with playwright Alan Ayckbourn, leading to her award-winning role as Jacie Triplethree in “Comic Potential,” which she performed in Scarborough, the West End, and New York, earning an Olivier, Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle, Obie, and Theatre World Award. Throughout the 2000s, Dee continued to showcase her versatility, engaging in operas, classical plays, and various musicals.

In more recent years, Dee has solidified her status as a leading figure in British theatre. She performed in Michael Frayn’s “Noises Off” at the Old Vic and West End, Lucy Kirkwood’s “NSFW” at the Royal Court, and “Blithe Spirit” alongside Dame Angela Lansbury. Her role as Dolly Levi in “Hello Dolly!” at Curve Leicester earned her the TMA UK Theatre Award for Best Performance in a Musical. Dee also actively engages in cabaret performances and is a producer, having organized the London Climate Change Festival and produced the Sky Arts program “Song for Nature” in 2021, demonstrating her commitment to environmental causes and creative endeavors outside of traditional acting roles.
