About

Janine Turner, born Janine Loraine Gauntt on December 6, 1962, in Lincoln, Nebraska, grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. Her early life included training in ballet, tap, theater, and modeling from the age of three. At 15, she became the youngest model ever signed by the Wilhelmina Agency. She later pursued acting in Hollywood at 17, landing minor roles on “Dallas” (1978). Her career progression led to a major break at 19 as Laura Templeton on the daytime soap “General Hospital” (1982-1983), followed by a role on “Another World” (1986-1987). Turner also made her film debut in “Young Doctors in Love” (1982) and appeared in “Tai-Pan” (1986).

A significant turning point in Turner’s career arrived when she was cast as Maggie O’Connell in the eccentric prime-time series “Northern Exposure” (1990-1995). This role, a spirited Alaskan air taxi pilot, became a career highlight, earning her an Emmy nomination in 1993 and three consecutive Golden Globe nominations from 1992 to 1994. Following this success, she tackled varied roles, including co-starring with Sylvester Stallone in the action thriller “Cliffhanger” (1993), portraying June Cleaver in the film adaptation of “Leave It to Beaver” (1997), and appearing in “Dr. T & the Women” (2000) with Richard Gere. She also had a regular role on “Strong Medicine” (2000-2002) for two years.

Into the 2000s, Turner expanded her professional scope. She moved into directing, writing, and producing, notable for her award-winning short film “Trip in a Summer Dress” (2004), which she also edited and executive produced. Her filmography includes roles in “Birdie & Bogey” (2004), “The Night of the White Pants” (2006), “Solace” (2015), and “Runnin’ from My Roots” (2018). From 2008 to 2009, she appeared in 12 episodes of the TV series “Friday Night Lights” as Katie McCoy. Beyond acting, Turner is an author, public speaker, and co-founder of Constituting America (2010), an organization dedicated to educating the public about the U.S. Constitution. She also hosted “The Janine Turner Show” on radio stations KLIF and KPRC from 2011 to 2013, which was recognized as “Best Radio Show in Dallas”.
