Born on February 20, 2004, in Sacramento, California, Jared Dane McCain began his basketball journey at Centennial High School in Corona, California. During his junior year (2021–22), he was recognized as the Gatorade Player of the Year for boys basketball in California, averaging 16.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. His high school career culminated with a selection to the 2023 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game and a repeat win of the California Gatorade Player of the Year award in his senior year, where he posted averages of 17.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. McCain’s journey was also chronicled in the YouTube docuseries ‘Believe’.
McCain committed to Duke University as a consensus five-star recruit, playing for the Duke Blue Devils during the 2023–24 season. He quickly made an impact, debuting on November 6, 2023, and later earning ACC Rookie of the Week honors twice in early 2024. A significant achievement came on February 17, 2024, when he scored a career-high 35 points, tying Zion Williamson’s Duke freshman record. He concluded his freshman year averaging 14.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, subsequently declaring for the 2024 NBA Draft.
Selected 16th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2024 NBA Draft, McCain signed a four-year contract on July 4, 2024. He made his NBA debut on October 23, 2024, and demonstrated his scoring ability with a career-high 34 points and 10 assists on November 13, 2024. His early performance earned him the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month award for October and November 2024. Despite injuries sidelining him for portions of his time with the 76ers, including a meniscus tear in December 2024 and a UCL repair in October 2025, McCain was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 4, 2026. He quickly integrated into the Thunder, achieving a playoff career-high of 24 points in the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
