Jasmine Cephas Jones was born on July 21, 1989, in London, England, and later grew up in Midwood, Brooklyn. She pursued her artistic education at the Berklee College of Music for vocal performance and trained in theater at The Neighborhood Playhouse. Her career began with appearances in independent films such as ‘Titus’ (2013) and ‘Fairfield’ (2014), and early television roles in ‘Blue Bloods’ (2013) and ‘Unforgettable’ (2014). From 2015 to 2016, Jones achieved notable recognition by originating the dual roles of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in the Broadway hit ‘Hamilton: An American Musical’. Her work on the ‘Hamilton’ cast album earned her a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2016.
Following her success on Broadway, Jones expanded her presence in film and television. She appeared in movies such as ‘Mistress America’ (2015), ‘Dog Days’ (2018), and the critically acclaimed ‘Blindspotting’ (2018), where she played the role of Ashley. In television, she had a recurring role in ‘Midnight, Texas’ (2018) and a significant role as Chloe in ‘Mrs. Fletcher’ (2019). A turning point in her television career came in 2020 with the short series ‘#FreeRayshawn’, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. This award made history, as she and her father, Ron Cephas Jones, became the first father-daughter duo to win Emmy Awards in the same year. This also marked her as the first Black woman to win in that specific Emmy category.
Building on her role in the film, Jones reprised her character Ashley in the spin-off television series ‘Blindspotting’, which premiered in 2021. For this series, she also served as a producer, marking her first producing credit. The series was renewed for a second season, further demonstrating her continued impact in the industry. She has also released music, including the EP ‘Blue Bird’ (2020) and the album ‘Phoenix’ (2024). Jones’ consistent work in diverse projects showcases her growth as an actress, singer, and producer.
