Jasmine Guy

Jasmine Guy was born on March 10, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She began her artistic journey at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City, demonstrating an early commitment to dance. Her career expanded to encompass acting, singing, and directing, establishing her as a versatile performer across various entertainment platforms. Guy’s notable early work included Broadway roles in original productions like ‘Beehive’ and ‘Leader of the Pack,’ as well as revivals of ‘Grease,’ ‘The Wiz,’ and ‘Chicago.’

Guy gained significant recognition for her starring role as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne in the NBC sitcom ‘A Different World,’ a spin-off of ‘The Cosby Show.’ Her portrayal earned her six consecutive NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series from 1989 to 1993. Beyond television, she made her film debut in Spike Lee’s ‘School Daze’ in 1988 and appeared in ‘Harlem Nights’ in 1989. Her varied career includes voice acting for ‘Cats Don’t Dance’ and a recurring role as Roxy Harvey in Showtime’s ‘Dead Like Me.’

In addition to her performance work, Guy released a self-titled debut album in 1990, featuring hit singles like “Try Me.” She has also made contributions behind the camera, writing and directing episodes of ‘A Different World’ and directing numerous theatre productions.
