Jason Hodges has dedicated his career to horticulture, stemming from a family background deeply rooted in the industry. His father was a bricklayer, his elder brother a horticulturalist, and his two older sisters florists—influences that naturally led him into landscaping. Hodges pursued formal education at Ryde TAFE, NSW, completing a course in Landscape Horticulture and Construction. His proficiency and passion for the subject were such that he later returned to teach the same course, solidifying his foundational expertise in the field. In 1990, Hodges established his own business, ‘Green Art Gardens,’ starting with minimal resources but growing it into an operation that employs multiple experienced landscapers, demonstrating his entrepreneurial success and commitment to hands-on work in the industry.
Hodges’ career expanded significantly into media, where he became a recognizable figure through his television appearances. He spent five years as the resident landscaper on Channel 7’s ‘Auction Squad’ before joining ‘Better Homes & Gardens,’ where he was a presenter for 15 years until 2019. During his tenure, ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ achieved considerable success, including a record 10th Silver Logie for Australia’s Most Popular Lifestyle Program in 2012. He also made regular appearances on ‘Sydney Weekender’ and ‘Sunrise,’ alongside consistent radio slots on 2UE, showcasing his broad reach across different media platforms. These roles highlighted his ability to communicate complex gardening concepts accessibly and entertainingly to a wide audience.
Throughout his career, Hodges has achieved significant recognition for his design work. He is a four-time Gold medallist at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS). A notable international achievement includes receiving the Silver Gilt medal at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in London in May 2012. This accolade was awarded for an ‘Australian Garden’ entry, which Hodges designed in collaboration with Fleming’s Nurseries, marking a career highlight and showcasing his talent on a global stage. The award was the team’s eighth medal in as many years, affirming his consistent excellence in garden design and construction. His work encompasses residential and commercial properties, offering comprehensive services from concept and design to construction and maintenance, including specialized areas such as turf establishment and water-efficient irrigation systems.
