Jason Johannisen was born on November 8, 1992, in Johannesburg, South Africa. His early childhood saw him relocate with his family to Perth, Western Australia, in 2000 at the age of eight. Initially, Johannisen engaged in rugby union with the Southern Lions Rugby Club. At 15, he transitioned to Australian rules football, playing his senior football with East Fremantle.
Johannisen’s professional career in the Australian Football League (AFL) began in 2011 when he was selected by the Western Bulldogs with the 39th pick in the rookie draft. He made his senior debut in Round 19 of the 2012 AFL season. A significant career milestone occurred in 2016, when he was a key player in the Western Bulldogs’ AFL premiership win. His performance in the 2016 Grand Final earned him the Norm Smith Medal, an award for the best player on the field, where he recorded 25 kicks, 33 disposals, and 7 marks. In July 2017, he signed a five-year contract extension with the Bulldogs, reflecting his value to the team.
Throughout his career, Johannisen has faced and overcome various physical challenges. In 2023, he missed nine weeks due to hamstring tendon damage and later sustained a calf injury, which ended his season. In 2024, a moderate-grade hamstring strain kept him out post-round nine. Despite these setbacks, he continued to contribute to his team. In the 2025 pre-season, he underwent surgery for a hamstring strain but made a return to play by round five, demonstrating his resilience and commitment to the sport.
