South African rugby union star Jasper Wiese competes for Leicester Tigers in Premiership Rugby in England. He has previously played for the Free State XV in the Rugby Challenge, the Free State Cheetahs in the Currie Cup, and the Cheetahs in the Pro14. He may play as a flanker or an eighth man. In 2021, he made his South African debut. In 2022, he won the Premiership Rugby title, scoring a try in the championship game and earning Man of the Match honours.
Wiese moved to England to play for Leicester Tigers in Premiership Rugby beginning in the 2020–21 season. Only four days after meeting his teammates, Wiese made his Leicester debut against Gloucester, and he made an impression with his strong carrying. For his performance against Bath on January 3, 2021, the broadcaster BT Sport named him Man of the Match. His performances attracted comparisons to Duane Vermeulen and rumours of a potential South African call-up. On February 20, 2021, Wiese scored Leicester’s first try in a victory over Wasps. However, Wiese was also given a red card for head contact during a risky ruck clearout, which resulted in a four-week suspension.
Wiese was selected for the Springboks team on June 5, 2021, in preparation for their test series against the British and Irish Lions. On July 2, 2021, against Georgia, he came on as a substitute to make his South African debut. Wiese scored the second try in Leicester’s 15-12 victory over Saracens in the 2022 Premiership final and was voted Man of the Match.
